How would you describe your personal style?
My style is really a blend of relaxed and feminine. I love when a look feels “effortless” (even though they hardly ever are)! I tend to always have a mix of high and low end pieces on- it’s all about what makes you feel good regardless of the brand or the cost. I’m all about wearing what makes you feel the most confident that day.
When did you launch Chic Happens and what made you decide to do it?
I launched Chic Happens in October of 2015 after about a year of lusting after the idea of blogging. I landed myself in a unique situation during that time where I had been working for a company that had been acquired, and was able to take a few months off and focus on doing things that I had always wanted to do outside of my career. I picked up a DSLR camera, downloaded Adobe photo shop and studied how to build a website and built Chic Happens during this time. I loved every second of it and felt so connected since I had no real guidance except what I was able to find on-line (the web has so much information for new bloggers!). I reached out to friends to help with coding when I needed it, graphic design for my logo and tips on photography and editing. It was a new adventure and two years later I still feel the same! I absolutely love it.
How do you stay current with what’s new or in style at the moment?
Social media and magazines. I am hooked on sites likes WhoWhatWear, Rachel Zoe, and following my favorite bloggers who inspire me daily. I also still love to pick up Vogue or Elle and flip through and see what’s current and coming up. The amount of content that is out there to discover is endless!
Who is your favorite brand/designer? Do you own any of their designs?
Since I was in college I have been obsessed with everything by Stacy Bendet of Alice + Olivia. Her entire line from dresses to sunglasses are so feminine and fun. I recently was in Los Angeles and had the chance to wander around her store in Beverly Hills. If budget allowed, I would have left with the entire store! Vera Wang is another that always just brings it. I got married this past October and had a dream come true moment and was able to choose one of her designs as my wedding gown. I swooned every time I got to step foot in her store for fittings. Her detail to design never ceases to amaze me and I’ll always cherish my blush dress. I also have some favorite go-to’s, like Paige denim, ASTR, J Crew and Vince. They never let me down.
Which items in your wardrobe get the most play?
I would have to say my high waisted jeans, suede booties and my leather jacket. Also my black Nike’s since I walk to the gym and try to go as much as possible. Pretty much the essentials of San Francisco living!
If you had to start your wardrobe from scratch, what 5 things would you go and buy straight away?
If you twist my arm… I would probably have to have: A pair of Paige jeans, a white tee from J Crew (they’re the best!), a black leather jacket, a big pair of sunnies- most likely something from Ray Ban, and a pair of nude pumps (I keep re-buying the nude pact pump from Charles David). A good pair of sneakers and black yoga pants would be a close runner up!
What are your 5 essential travel items?
Noise cancelling headphones, a really good face moisturizer, curling iron, DSLR camera and a comfortable pair of (cute) walking shoes.
What’s a place you wish to visit?
Bali is top on my list. I would love to do a Southeast Asia trip and end up there. South Africa is another one although the travel time seems daunting! If we make it to either I’ll be sure to post lots of details on Chic Happens!
What is the best advice you have ever received and the best advice you have to give?
This is a tough one, but I’ll narrow it down to the best blogging advice I’ve ever received. Last year I attended the Create + Cultivate conference in Los Angeles and had the opportunity to meet and listen to some of the biggest bloggers in the industry (Chriselle Lim, Taylor Sterling..) as well as celebrities (Jessica Alba, Rachel Zoe..) it was amazing. During one of the panels they went around and asked for advice to give your younger self, someone said “never compare yourself to anyone else’s. It will kill your authenticity and confidence”. That one really stuck with me as I think, particularly with blogging that can be an easy thing to fall into.
What is the one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
That I am not a camper. Just kidding, I’m pretty sure that one would not be a major surprise! People are always surprised to hear that I can be somewhat of a homebody. As someone who tends to always have a jam packed schedule, I have grown to really love quiet time alone and weekends at home with my husband and our dog. It’s so nice to take a little time for yourself every now and then with no plans.
