We were lucky enough to be joined by Alexandra Evjen this morning.  Alex is an incredible mother of two, a stylist, wife and fashionista! Her site and Instagram is a great source of information and inspiration for us.  Read below to see how she does her photo shoots, her favorite wardrobe items and what she wanted to be as a kid.

What inspired you to launch AVE Styles?

AVE Styles began as a personal styling company. I was in a dead-end PR job in Phoenix, Arizona, and I wanted to be in the fashion industry. I had no way to afford a second degree or be able to move to California or New York, so I just decided to start a website and a styling company and figure it out on my own.

Have you always had a passion for style and fashion?

I knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry at 14 years old. I would constantly sketch designs in my notebook, and I would spend every Sunday at the mall from morning until close looking at how clothes were constructed. The interest and passion never left.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be?

I also wanted to be a professional clarinetist, and studied music at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston. Music and fashion were neck and neck for a while.

What’s most important to you in choosing an outfit for the day?

Comfort first. If I’m not comfortable in my clothes I can’t feel confident in my clothes. I often opt for pants and boots because I feel stylish, confident and comfortable in them.

Current favorite item in your wardrobe?

My black leather ankle boots are probably my favorite thing to wear. I wear them almost every day, and they make me feel like I have an edge.

If you had a chance to work with a fashion designer, who would it be?

Carolina Herrera. She is a confident woman whose designs are powerful, feminine and meticulous.

If you could give one piece of style advice, what would it be?

Personal style will only come with self-acceptance. Focus on understanding who you are, and then you’ll find your clothes are a truer reflection of the inside.

How do you avoid awkward poses while shooting?

You look so natural in all of your photos? I think modeling takes a lot of practice. You just have to spend a lot of time in front of the camera. I always move from pose to pose while the photographer is shooting. Movement helps keep things natural. Also, a good photographer should know a woman’s body and what angles are most flattering. Between those things anyone can nail it.

What are the trends that you are currently coveting?  Do you think you’ll love them next year?

I really like the trend of volume lately. Whether that be voluminous sleeves, pants or jackets. I find it very comfortable too. I don’t think it’s going to stay around for long, but it’s definitely fun right now.

Where do you hope fashion will take you in the future?

I hope that fashion takes me to deeper places with women. I really feel that fashion and style is all a reflection of the heart. I want to reach women’s hearts to help set them free, and if fashion is a good place to start then so be it.
