In our inaugural edition of Q&A we had the pleasure of interviewing Elly Brown of “Uptown with Elly Brown”. We discuss a range of topics from her love of dark washed skinny jeans to balancing blogging while being a busy mom of two boys. You can check out our interview below. How’d you get into fashion blogging?
It just sort of happened. I thought about starting a blog a few years ago, but it wasn’t until I left my job to stay home with my boys that I finally took the plunge. I have always loved fashion and beauty, so I knew that is what I wanted to do.
How would you describe your personal style?
Chic, casual and feminine (I love anything pink!).
How have you developed your style?
Trial and error, Ha! As I got older, I quickly learned what I like and don’t like. I’m a mom, so I’m always about casual looks. I also, unfortunately, have awful pictures to remind myself what NOT to do.
Who is your fashion icon?
My favorite blogger is Christine Andrews from Hello Fashion. Love her style! Also, Blair Eadie, this girl does not wrong, ever.
If you had to start your wardrobe from scratch, what five things would you go and buy straight away?
Only 5?! Oh gosh…
- Dark wash skinny jeans (it goes with ANYTHING).
- A structured bag (black, or nude) to go with any look.
- Black Suede Pumps
- A basic tee.
- Little black (lace) dress. I love anything lace!
What daily tools and platforms do you use in your blogging routine, for research, promotion, sharing and other?
Pinterest and Google for research, both are never ending search engines. My daily apps are Planoly, WhenToPost. I use Iconosquare daily to reply to comments (it’ easier typing on the computer then on the phone.) I also use BoardBooster and PostPlanner to schedule posts.
Who/what is your greatest source of inspiration?
My mom and sister. Both of them have such beautiful hearts. Both selfless, and strong women. I admire them both so much.
Which style magazines do you read?
Instyle, People StyleWatch, and Vogue.
Tell me about one item that you bought this year that you just can’t live without?
Hmm…oh Gosh, this is harder than I thought. A few months ago I bought myself a present for all my hard work. I got a Valentino rock stud clutch; I love it!! Now I need to get matching shoes!
What advice would you give those moms trying to balance it all?
Take time for yourself. I think as moms we try to do it and be it all and many times we forget to recharge. I can’t pour into my family and my blog if I am empty and have nothing to give. I’m a better mom when I wake up and have some alone time, take a hot bath, or even going to target alone. Take some time to stop and take care of yourself.
