High End Makeup— Is It Really Worth the Price?

Ladies, is there even a number high enough to count the times we’ve walked through a makeup store and seen something we loved, only to sigh and walk away after seeing the price tag?  As Coco Chanel once said, “The very best things in life are free. The second best things are very expensive”. She’s not wrong. No matter what your weakness is, whether its shoes, makeup, clothes, or perfume, advertising tells us that we have to pay the big bucks to get the best products. I am here to tell you that this isn’t always the case. There are so many amazing drug store and low end makeup products that can totally change the way you look without breaking the bank.

No one wants to spend their entire paycheck on a good foundation. With that being said, the most important and essential makeup product, no matter the look you’re going for, is foundation. It is the canvas for the masterpiece you are about to create. Every flawless makeup look has to start off with a good base, but that doesn’t mean your base should cost you an arm and a leg. If you’re oily and wishing to create a matte look, try L’Oreal Paris’ Infallible pro-Matte 24HR foundation. It’s only $12.99 and one of the best drug store foundations you’ll find for oily skin. Not using a foundation made especially for people with oily skin can make skin appear splotchy and start to wear off faster in trouble spots.

On the other side, if you’re like me and are living somewhere cold, dry skin is a constant problem. When the skin is dry, makeup can look “cakey” or uneven. Try NYX’s Stay Matte But Not Flat liquid foundation for just $7.49. It will give a matte finish without drying out your skin.

Some of the most amazing and unique looks are focused around the eyes. If they’re going to be the window to the soul, why not make the window breathtaking? Eyeshadow palettes can reach over $150 in some cases, but don’t be fooled by the brand name on the box. Many companies offer good quality eyeshadows that are buttery soft, pigmented, and long lasting. One of the current leaders in affordable eye shadow palettes is Morphe. A standard palette comes with 35 different shades, and some with more than one texture. When I first saw the price on these palettes, I thought “This cannot be right”, but as soon as my first palette came in the mail, I was baffled at the quality and quantity I got and paid so little for. Below is the $22.99 350s- 35 color shimmer Nature Glow eyeshadow palette. Packed with 35 rich, glittery shades that you’re sure to love.

The key to buying anything really, is finding the perfect midpoint between quality and quantity. Sometimes we have to pay a little more to get something that’s going to last us a while.  A $15 pair of jeans from forever 21 won’t last more than a year at best, but a $40-$50 pair of J. Crew jeans will last you years, if taken care of properly. Makeup is the same way. Cheap products break easily and aren’t concentrated, so you apply twice as much. Finding a good eyebrow pencil that won’t break can be a lengthy process. I’ve personally never been a big fan of eyebrow pencils since they run out faster than most other makeup, no matter the price, and are extremely fragile. Plus, it’s easy to get carried away and then your brows end up looking extremely fake. Try something more natural, like a tinted brow gel. MAC Cosmetics offers a $15.30 waterproof brow gel that is absolutely worth the price. It will last you months without running out of product, and gets your brows to look full and stay in place.

Having to re-apply makeup is such a pain. No one likes repeatedly pulling out their compact or running to the bathroom mirror to check their current lipstick situation. Finding a long lasting lipstick that works for you can be hard, and expensive. Makeup companies make lofty promise of 12 hour wear, when they realistically only last 2 hours. Depending on the texture and consistency you prefer, whether that’s velvet matte, liquid metallic, or a creamy finish, there is an affordable lipstick on the market that will perfectly satisfy all your lipstick needs. Milani Cosmetics, an Italian based company, makes amazing creamy but matte lipsticks. they’re $6 and leave your lips feeling hydrated and smooth. A big issue with cheap liquid lipstick is cracking. Once you have it on for a while, the matte finish starts to crack and your lips feel grossly dry and chapped. Try their color statement moisture matte lipstick. This product seriously hydrates your lips and comes in 24 diverse shades.

Whether you’re going for a natural look or you’re going for full on glam, mascara is an essential part of the finished product. There are hundreds of different mascaras, and they all claim to lengthen, thicken, and not be clumpy. How do we know who to believe when everyone’s saying the same thing? My best advice is to ask around. Trust your friends and family and people who have actually tried out the product before buying it yourself. L’Oreal Paris has a mascara that I have been using—and loving— since I started wearing makeup; it’s their “Telescopic Mascara”. The wand is thin and made of rubber, so it acts like a comb, making lashes long and lustrous. It’s miraculously only $8.49 and can be used for months without drying out.

You don’t need to go to cosmetology school so be able to create a flawless makeup look, and your makeup certainly shouldn’t be the most expensive thing you buy in the beauty department. All it takes is the right products for your skin type, and your wallet, and you too can leave the house look like a Kardashian.
