Joining us today is Sarah Knuth. Sarah is a Floridian who is now located in the Midwest and embracing the style and opportunities there! She runs a photography business out of the Indianapolis area and uses her site and Instagram to capture some amazing shots! Take a read through our chat with her and be sure to follow her so you can jump onto her personal blog once it launches!
What inspired you to start Indianapolens?
I’m a Wedding Photographer in Indianapolis and Indianapolens.com is my business blog! I love sharing recent sessions I’ve shot and what I’m working on there. I’m excited to be starting a personal lifestyle blog later this year as well!
Have you always had a passion for style and fashion?
I haven’t! I’m pretty sure I’m the textbook example of a “late-bloomer”. Growing up I loved playing Soccer and Violin and I had ZERO interest in anything fashion or beauty related. It really wasn’t until the last five years or so that I’ve actually enjoyed experimenting with my hair, makeup and outfits.
How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my fashion style as “Girly Tomboy”. I’m a sucker for blush pink or anything with bows or ruffles, but I also wear a lot of sneakers and baseball caps, and I love adding leather or camo to my look.
What are the trends that you are currently coveting? Do you think you’ll love them next year?
I am LOVING all the perforated shoes this spring! I hope that I’ll still love them next year because I’ve already bought wedges, booties, and slip-on sneakers that are perforated!
How do you avoid those awkward poses while shooting?
I don’t! Almost every time I’m shooting an outfit I think about half the images come out super awkward or totally unflattering. The key for me is to just move around a lot and take plenty of images so I have a lot to pick from. I usually end up taking at least 30 pictures of an outfit just to end up with a few that I’ll use.
What camera do you use, and what do you use to edit your photos?
I use my iPhone for a lot of my Instagram shots and those are edited with the VSCO app. If I want a high-def image for myself or my clients, I use my Nikon D800 and edit in Lightroom.
If you had to start your wardrobe from scratch, what 5 things would you go and buy straight away?
Jeans, a good basic tee, and some neutral colored booties. Then I’d probably get a statement necklace to dress it up and a ball cap to dress it down.
What do you pack for vacation?
Way too much! I am a chronic “over-packer”. My suitcase is usually over the weight limit and I have to shove stuff into my husband’s bag at the last minute. I always make sure to bring comfortable sneakers though for the airport and days we’ll be doing a lot of walking!
What’s a place you wish to visit?
Greece! My husband and I are hoping to visit sometime this year or next!
If you could offer some words of encouragement to a newbie or frustrated fashion blogger, what would they be?
Work hard and do it because you LOVE it! When I first started my photography business I was still working my 9-5 job because that’s what was paying the bills. I would work full-time there, then shoot sessions in the evenings and weddings on the weekends, and spend my nights editing. It was a lot of hard work but it truly didn’t feel like it because I LOVED it! Eventually all that work paid off and I was able to quit my corporate job and now I work for myself doing what I love every day. If you’re willing to put in the work, it will pay off!
