From one of the epicenter’s of fashion comes Katherine Bruce! Katherine is a Midwesterner at heart but currently resides in Los Angeles. She took the leap and runs the fashion blog Midwest to the Best. Be sure to check her site and Instagram out!
When did you launch Midwest to the Best and what made you decide to get into fashion blogging?
I launched Midwest to the Best in October of 2016. Fashion has always been a passion and hobby of mine. I’ve followed fashion bloggers for years and have spent hours on social media researching the latest trends but had never been in the fashion industry myself. I moved from Kansas City to Los Angeles nearly a year ago and I would always get compliments on my outfits in public with people asking where I got my clothing. I wanted to have an outlet to share my style with others, and after much thought, I decided to take a risk and pursue a fashion blog.
What inspires your style?
My style has always been very feminine; however, since I moved to LA I have found that my style has been evolving to incorporate more edgy pieces. For example, if I am wearing something lace or frilly, I would combine it with some leather, over the knee boots or a choker – something to give it more of an edge. Midwest to the Best is about my fashion journey and how it’s changed since moving to LA.
How do you stay current with what’s new or in style at the moment?
I am on shop sites all the time! I sign up for emails from websites like Shopbop or Revolve because they often send emails about what’s trending at the moment and what pieces they carry to support that trend. I try not to purchase an item because I see it on another blogger. I want my fashion to be truly authentic to me and unique to my viewers, so it’s important I chose all the pieces myself. To be honest, I don’t spend a lot of time reading high fashion magazines. I try to choose pieces between the $50-100 range that cater to the everyday woman.
What are some of the latest fashion trends you love?
As I mentioned earlier, I have a definite feminine side to my style and I am so excited that ruffles are trending right now. Crochet and lace is also a trend for Spring 2017 that I really like.
What are some the latest fashion trends you can NOT stand?
Another trend for Spring 2017 is a 70’s inspired boho-chic look. The hippie style just isn’t my taste – I am not a fan of flowy dresses and tops. I prefer my pieces to have a shape to them to flatter the figure. The patterns also lack the color and definition I like. That’s not to say this style doesn’t look good on others – many bloggers pull this look off very well! It just isn’t me.
Who is your favorite brand/designer? Do you own any of their designs?
A brand that I love for their price point and style is Endless Rose. They’ve done a really good job incorporating the ruffles and lace trend this winter and spring. I own many of their pieces and post the brand often! A higher end brand that has always been a favorite of mine is Alice and Olivia. I own some of their pieces (not as many as I would like) and I feel that their designs are classy but also combine the feminine and edge that I love.
What outfit have you worn that most represents your fashion style?
It’s hard to pick just one! I would probably say that most recently I wore a red dress by the brand, Likely, for a Valentine’s post and it is a great representation of my style. It’s feminine, but is form fitting and shows enough skin to make you feel really sexy. I always feel confident in that dress.
What’s your favorite fashion era from the 21st century?
I don’t think I have a favorite era yet, I feel like this century is still new and evolving so it’s too soon to tell for me.
What daily tools and platforms do you use in your blogging routine, for research, promotion, sharing and other?
I am a Reward Style influencer so I constantly use the LiketoKnow.it platform to post to their website and to Instagram. I use WordPress for my blog and I am also on Twitter, Facebook and BlogLovin’. I would say Instagram is the biggest platform for me and the way I reach the majority of followers. It’s also my favorite because it makes it so easy for me to engage with my followers and with other bloggers. I am also a member of Style Collective.
Where do you hope fashion blogging will take you in the future?
I hope to continue to grow and expand Midwest to the Best. I want to work with many brands and develop strong partnerships. I love the exciting opportunities that come with the blogging world. I am truly passionate about this industry and I think it’s important to always stay true to yourself in order to be successful. Fashion is so much fun and at the end of the day, my end goal is to give other women the confidence to not only feel good about what they wear but feel good about who they are.
