What inspired you to launch Style to My Street?
I launched Style to My Street because my job at the time wasn’t giving me the fulfillment I was craving. I was hoping that with Style to My Street I could find a challenge for myself and hopefully inspire a few others along the way.
Have you always had a passion for style and fashion?
YES! Ever since I was a little girl, I have always found my freedom and my identity through my personal style. I remember taking t-shirt design classes with my mom at our local Michael’s craft store when I was about 9 or 10. At 14, I started designing my own bikinis and handbags with unwanted clothes and fabric family and friends would leave me. I remember being incredibly inspired by fashion magazines and movies at an early age and just wanting to be creative.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be?
I’ve always secretly wanted to perform for an audience – to dance, to act. I went to dance school for 15 years, but gave that all up when I got into UCLA. I thought, “I can’t turn down such a good school!” I was planning on going to law school after UCLA, but of course my heart took over my head. I graduated UCLA and went to Parsons The New School for my second degree. I love learning and my major Design & Management seemed perfect for my creative interests.
What’s most important to you in choosing an outfit for the day?
I always dress for my mood. As long as I am comfortable and confident that is all that matters. When picking specifics for the day, I always try and pick something that’s a statement piece or something that will tie a look together. I love a well-put together look whether you are headed to a dinner party or to the gym. I dress to feel good and never for others.
Current favorite item in your wardrobe?
My Adidas Cigarette Track Pants – I can dress them down for the movies or dress them up with heels for dinner.
If you had a chance to work with a fashion designer, who would it be?
There are so many incredibly talented designers! Can I name a few? The ultimate dream would be: Alexander Wang, Raf Simons, Nicolas Ghesquière and any Australian designer (Dion Lee, Zimmerman to name a few).
If you could give one piece of style advice, what would it be?
Always, always, always feel confident in what you’re wearing! I am such a firm believer in confidence being your best accessory. If it is a bold lip that will do that for you or a statement piece – whatever it is, dress for you and make sure you feel your best!
How do you avoid awkward poses while shooting? You look so natural in all of your photos?
Haha! Thank you! We shoot A LOT. I’m such a perfectionist. It’s a good and a bad thing I suppose. Luckily, my sweet boyfriend who is also my photographer is very patient. He used to be a professional photographer, so he is incredibly talented in getting the perfect capture.
What are the trends that you are currently coveting? Do you think you’ll love them next year?
I’m very much into the athleisure trend at the moment. I am loving oversized pieces, sneakers with dresses and track pants with heels. I love to balance a look and tie it together as a whole.
I think I’ll continue to love this trend for years to come. My style is very streetwear meets feminine and balancing that all so I don’t think that trend will pass for me. I think I will always find a way to incorporate some boy-ish streetwear pieces into my love for lace and silk.
Where do you hope fashion will take you in the future?
Great question! I hope that wherever it takes me, it allows me to inspire women. I’m such an advocate of lady bosses and hope that what I do can inspire someone else. I don’t think I really speak much on my love for empowering women, but I hope to for 2017. My boyfriend (Emilio) and I have started a few successful companies, so I hope that we can take what we know as entrepreneurs and apply it to fashion someday.
