Law school grad, Phoenix resident and dog-lover Caitlin Lindquist joined us to chat about her site and Instagram. She was generous enough to talk about everything from her love of Kate Moss to the source of her passion for style and fashion. Give her a read and be sure to follow her. You won’t be sorry!
When did you launch The Dash of Darling and what made you decide to get into fashion blogging?
For Christmas 2012 I received my first DSLR camera and Photoshop and decided to plunge right into the blogging world (head first)! I was in my third year of law school and had little time for much else than burying my face in a book, but it was a welcome distraction and I loved having the creative outlet. Initially I had hoped that my blog might open some doors in the fashion realm for a career in-house within the fashion industry– but my blog grew quickly and had became a passion of mine. One that I decided to pursue full time following graduation and the Bar exam, and I haven’t looked back.
What has changed most about fashion blogging culture/the blogging industry since you started?
When I first began, there was this naivety to it, I suppose. Blogging was so new at that point and no one really had a clue what he or she were doing, myself included. Since then it’s been fun to watch the industry grow and change. From the inclusion of Instagram to more professional websites, a lot has changed since those initial design-your-own-blog-from-your-myspace-html-coding days. And I am grateful for it. It’s been so fun to learn and grow along the way and watch an entire industry be built from a new wave of entrepreneurial spirits.
Have you always had a passion for style and fashion?
I have always loved playing with fashion. From an early age my mom would pull me out of school to go shopping and try on clothes (sshhh, don’t tell my teachers haha). We would twirl and laugh in the dressing rooms, and I couldn’t wait to put together my outfits before school.
In elementary school my Mom even put me through her own rigorous course of “shopping training.” This basically involved me shopping for someone else the whole day, carrying bags and not complaining. Pretty funny when I think back on it.
But, I think from an early age I developed this passion for playing around with my own style – creating outfits, stealing my mom’s vintage items and pairing them with new. No matter where I was at in life – high school, studying abroad in Spain, college, my first job, law school – I was always “dressing to impress,” as they say. Or, more appropriately, dressing to “express” (myself).
Who is your fashion icon?
Kate Moss is so effortless and has this enviable “IDGAF” edge. I also adore Diane Kruger’s masculine meets feminine high-style. She slays.
Who is your favorite brand/designer? Do you own any of their designs?
I mean, Chanel is a classic. So artful, so feminine, so classic. My first Chanel I received upon graduation from law school – and, “it’s been downhill ever since” (as my husband would say) haha. I am also a HUGE fan of Zimmermann’s über feminine, romantic and victorian-esque designs. Their prints are so unique and chic.
What are the trends that you are currently coveting? Do you think you’ll love them next year?
I think off-shoulder is such a fun trend that really looks good on everyone and is likely here to stay. And right now, I am also loving all things bell sleeves. But I think, too, as I get older, I tend to get a little more classic and a little less trendy.
What is your favorite social platform and why?
I would have to say Instagram. It’s the platform I am most active on. I, like most people, am pretty visual and I love scrolling through to see beautiful, inspirational photos. On that note, I am also an avid Pinterest user.
Current favorite item in your wardrobe?
Oh, that’s so hard! Currently I am all about my Madewell bodysuits and high-rise denim. They are my go-to. But I am also pretty obsessed with this new fur coat (don’t hate me!) I got for Spring! It’s so lush and soft.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Phoenix?
Drink coffee haha. There are so many great coffee shops in Phoenix and one of my favorite things to do is discover new ones and hang at my old faves. Yes, I love hiking and being outdoors – when the weather permits – but let’s be real… AZ is hot! I’ve learned to seek refuge in my coffee shops.
PS, you can find more of my favorites on my Phoenix Travel Guide.
What are your goals for The Dash of Darling in 2017?
GROW! EXPAND! Share more. Be more. Work hard. Travel more. Instagram more (I am pretty bad at keeping up with it as often as I should). Think outside the box and get more creative.
