Straight from the Dallas court room to our pages!  Alex Lo maintains the-fashion-brief and an awesome Instagram site.  In addition to covering her amazing styles she chronicles some awesome travels – take a look at her trip to London!  Take a read through her interview and then make sure to peruse her site and Instagram!  She’s a must-follow!

When did you launch The Fashion Brief and what made you decide to get into fashion blogging?

I launched The Fashion Brief in May 2015.  I was in my second year of practicing law, and quite frankly, pretty unhappy.  I felt unfulfilled and bored.  At work, all of the female attorneys and paralegals would always comment on my outfits and ask where I got x, y, z, and at the time, I followed several fashion bloggers on Instagram.  I noticed that none of them were going to a conservative corporate office every day, nor were they posting outfits appropriate for such an environment.  That’s when I decided to fill the gap and start my own fashion blog for working women.  I started by taking pictures in the bathroom at my office (insert monkey covering eyes emoji here).

Have you always had a passion for style and fashion?

Yes!  I definitely get it from my mom.  In fact, she (and my grandmother) can still out-shop me.  My passion for style even influenced my career.  I tell the story about how I decided to go to law school on my website:  I was finishing up my freshman year of college at the University of Texas (HOOK ‘EM!) at a nutrition/pre-med major, and I was bored in my pre-requisite science classes. I was at Nordstrom picking something up, and there it was, the most beautiful blazer and skirt I had ever laid my eyes on up to that point. At that moment, I decided I wanted to trade a lifetime of scrubs for a lifetime of dresses, skirts, and blazers that would perfectly capture my strong-willed, hard-working, go-getter (and fun!) personality and my mood that day.

How do you stay up to date with the latest fashion and beauty trends?

I follow a ton of other fashion bloggers and I’m always surfin’ the web for more inspiration.  I make sure to check out my favorite designers during fashion week and I’m always watching celebs to see what they’re currently coveting.

What are the trends that you are currently coveting?  Do you think you’ll love them next year?

Velvet, velvet, velvet.  It reminds me of my leotards in gymnastics when I was growing up and I love it.  There’s something comforting about it to me, whether it’s my velvet bomber jacket or velvet shoes, I always feel cool when I put it on.  I will definitely be loving velvet next year.

Who is your favorite brand/designer?  Do you own any of their designs?

That’s a tough one! I don’t have one favorite brand or designer, but I definitely have a favorite store and that’s Nordstrom.  You cannot beat their customer service.  I truly believe it’s the best in the business.  A few of my other go-to stores include: Topshop, Ann Taylor, and Banana Republic.

What beauty products can’t you live without?

Sunscreen!  After destroying my skin from years of tanning, I’ve finally flipped to the other side.  I make sure to put on sunscreen every day, whether it’s sunscreen in my BB/CC cream or a separate sunscreen.  I also can’t live without my Dr. Gross alpha/beta glow pads because they give me some color so I don’t completely look like Casper.

What’s most important to you in choosing an outfit for the day?

Comfort is key for me.  I’m generally sitting in my office for at least 10 hours a day staring at a computer screen.  It’s so hard for me to sit still and I’m constantly changing positions so I have to be wearing something that’s conducive to those positions.  I sit cross-legged in my chair a lot, so I’ve found myself wearing fewer and fewer pencil skirts, even though I adore pencil skirts and own close to 50 of them.  My office is always so cold so I’m usually wrapped up in my blanket with my space heater on.  I can’t wear clothes that wrinkle easily because I look like a hot mess walkin’ out of my office with a skirt that has blanket-lines all over it.

If you had to start your wardrobe from scratch, what 5 things would you go and buy straight away?

Only 5?!  1 – A pair of FRAME or Mother jeans because they are the two most comfortable brands I’ve ever tried – they are seriously amazing.  2 – A classic and versatile black dress that I could wear to work or wear on date night.  3 – A chic black blazer to throw on over my black dress if I have to go to court, have a client meeting, or to throw on with jeans for date night or a night with the girls.  4 – A plain white tee because we all need one.  5 – Classic black pumps to wear with all of the above.

What’s your favorite thing to do in Dallas?

This is going to sound so lame, but it’s hanging out with my fiancé and snuggling with my pups while we binge watch Netflix shows.  Other than that, I love going out to happy hour or dinner with friends.  There are so many great restaurants in Dallas and in so many areas of town, so it’s fun to explore new places.  I love going to Klyde Warren Park and exploring in the Bishop Arts District and West Village.  Katy Trail and White Rock Lake are also two of my favorites on a nice day.

What are your goals for The Fashion Brief in 2017?

I want to expand The Fashion Brief to cover more of my life in general, including my home décor and traveling.  I also want to incorporate more law to the website – discussing relevant lawsuits and other legal questions that are relevant to working women and bloggers.
