Love Your Melon Has Donated Over $1.5M to Help Fight Pediatric Cancer

With the simple goal of putting a hat on every child battling cancer in America, startup Love Your Melon is well on their way to reaching their ambitious aspirations. Love Your Mellon has donated $1.5 million to help fight pediatric cancer here in America. Their model is straight forward, they donate 50% of all profits to help fight the disease which is currently the second most common cause of death in children behind accidents.

Zachary Quinn and Brian Keller founded Love Your Melon in 2012 after starting the project for their entrepreneurship class at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Since starting the company Quinn and Keller have amassed an 11,000-strong college student ambassador army who help fight the cause. The students organize community events for children who are currently suffering from the disease across 761 schools.

The founders initially started spreading the word by implementing a grass roots marketing campaign the old-fashioned way. They bought a used bus from a local hockey team with nearly 1 million miles on it and hit the road. Their marketing efforts since have certainly gotten the word out to the masses. They have partnered up with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Dr. Oz just to name a few. In 2015 alone they managed to sell over 160,000 hats, more than quadrupling their 2014 number.

The LYM team is on track to bring in $18 million in revenue this year and sell over 600,000 hats. As far as who they are helping, their mission statement says their non-profit partners “work in the field of pediatric oncology, fund cancer research initiatives and provide immediate support for families of children battling cancer.” The money also goes towards helping to fund the various community events, “In communities across the country, our Crew Members raise awareness for childhood cancer and represent our brand. Crew members also coordinate, plan, and run beanie donation events all year long.”

Quinn and Keller who are both not even 25 years old yet have created something truly special with Love Your Melon. They have been able to help countless children in need while at the same time building a healthy and sustainable business that shows no signs of slowing down. The team has also recently expanded into other forms of apparel outside of just hats. Love Your Melon now offers caps, beanies, apparel and accessories.
